slut

I dislike the word. I think part of this dislike stems from the fact that girls use it to bash each other, tease and joke with each other and seem to forget where it stemmed from. Boys use it to describe a type of woman, or use other derivatives (skeeze) rather than talk about what the girl is actually like, basing her as a human being completely upon her sexual nature.

Sure some people have decided to try and take the word and empower it, as is the case in The Ethical Slut which refers to the term as a person's sexuality and choice to openly have multiple partners. However, I still do not get why we feel the need to use slut, a word that originated as a term for dirty, slovenly and unkempt women, as the word to describe being sexually open, curious and free? And what's more, why would we try naming/shaming these people based on their sexual lives alone?

Basically this rant all stemmed from an article on American Apparel ads, whose title is: "The 50 Sluttiest American Apparel Ads of All Time".

Why use the term sluttiest? Why not provocative? Sure the ads are sexual, but slutty? Not in my mind.
